Preview

The Boston Red Sox return to Fenway Park on Friday, August 7 for a 7:10 PM ET showdown with the Athletics. Payton Tolle gets the ball for Boston against Oakland's Jack Perkins in what shapes up as a pitching matchup between two arms the respective organizations are counting on to contribute down the stretch. With the calendar deep into August, every game carries genuine weight — this is not a situation where either club can afford to sleepwalk through a Friday night at home.

Probable Pitchers: Payton Tolle vs. Jack Perkins

Payton Tolle draws the start for the Red Sox. The right-hander will be making his case on one of the most pressure-tested stages in the sport — a Fenway crowd on a Friday night is not the place for a pitcher to discover his weaknesses. Tolle will need to command the strike zone early and keep the Athletics' lineup off-balance if Boston wants to grab the series opener.

Jack Perkins takes the mound for Oakland. The Athletics will lean on Perkins to keep a Boston lineup that includes Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida in check. Perkins' ability to navigate the middle of that order will largely determine Oakland's chances of stealing a win on the road.

Keys to Watch at Fenway Park

The Middle of Boston's Order

Caleb Durbin batting cleanup is a storyline worth watching. Durbin at the four-hole signals that the Red Sox want production from a player who has earned that spot in the lineup. How he handles that responsibility against Perkins — particularly with runners on base — could define the game's early momentum.

Yoshida as the Anchor at DH

Masataka Yoshida batting fifth as the designated hitter keeps Boston's lineup balanced. If Abreu and Durbin do damage in front of him, Yoshida becomes the most dangerous at-bat of the inning. Perkins will need a plan to neutralize that stretch of the order.

Rafaela in Center Field

Ceddanne Rafaela batting second and playing center field gives Boston both offensive and defensive versatility at the top of the lineup. His ability to get on base and cover ground in center is an asset Tolle will appreciate behind him.

Oakland's Power Threats

Tyler Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler give the Athletics legitimate run-producing options. If Tolle loses the strike zone against that pair, Oakland has the lineup depth to make him pay. Tolle's command will be the single biggest factor in how deep he goes into this game.

Prediction

Boston takes this one at home. The Fenway crowd on a Friday night is a factor in itself, and the Red Sox lineup has enough firepower in the three through five spots to generate runs against Perkins. Tolle will need to be efficient, but the edge goes to the home side. Red Sox 5, Athletics 3.
