Preview

The Boston Red Sox host the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday, August 5, with first pitch set for 7:10 PM ET on NESN. Sonny Gray gets the ball for Boston, squaring off against Chicago right-hander Sean Burke in what shapes up as an intriguing pitching matchup between a veteran presence and a younger arm still carving out his place in the big leagues. With the calendar deep into August, every game carries genuine weight in the standings, and this one is no exception for a Red Sox club playing in front of its home crowd.

Pitching Matchup: Sonny Gray vs. Sean Burke

Gray is the anchor of this start for Boston. A savvy, experienced right-hander, he gives the Red Sox exactly what you want from a top-of-the-rotation piece — command, pitch mix, and the ability to eat innings and keep the offense in the game. His assignment Wednesday is straightforward: attack the White Sox lineup early, limit traffic on the bases, and hand the bullpen a lead worth protecting.

Burke is the less-established name in this matchup. The 24-year-old right-hander has the stuff to keep hitters off balance, but facing a lineup at Fenway in a meaningful August contest is a different test than anything a young pitcher navigates earlier in his career. How Burke handles Boston's lineup in the early innings will set the tone for everything that follows.

Keys to Watch at Fenway Park

Can Boston's Lineup Solve Burke Early?

The Red Sox have enough lineup depth to do real damage against a pitcher they may not have seen much of. Contreras hitting cleanup, Yoshida at DH, and Duran in the seven-hole give Boston multiple ways to generate runs. Getting to Burke in the first time through the order — before he settles in — is the blueprint.

Rafaela and Abreu Setting the Table

Ceddanne Rafaela batting second and Wilyer Abreu hitting third puts two dynamic, athletic outfielders in position to do damage in front of Contreras. Abreu in particular, with his developing power stroke, is someone the White Sox cannot afford to pitch around too often in this ballpark.

Former Red Sox in the Chicago Lineup

Andrew Benintendi slides into the DH spot for Chicago, batting fifth. Benintendi spent the first several years of his career in Boston before departing, and he always seems to play with something extra at Fenway. The Red Sox pitching staff, and Gray specifically, will need to be sharp when Benintendi comes to the plate.

Gray's Command in the Strike Zone

The game almost certainly runs through Gray's performance. If he's locating his fastball and mixing his secondary pitches effectively, the White Sox lineup — which leans on younger, less experienced contributors outside of a handful of names — will struggle to string together big innings.

Prediction

Gray takes care of business. The veteran right-hander gives the Red Sox six solid innings, and Boston's lineup does enough against Burke to build a lead that holds up. The Red Sox win this one at home, 5-2. Catch all the action on NESN or on the radio at WEEI 93.7.
